Superficial spreading malignant melanoma

As the melanoma advances inversion occurs vertically and a dark papule may develop. Note also the notch on the right lower side of the lesion and the surrounding sun damage.
Two black nodules are apparent in this invading melanoma. There is a grey area between them which represents regression of part of the lesion. This South African presented with two melanomas.
This melanoma has invaded throughout its surface causing thickening or plaque formation, rather than discrete papules or nodules.
There is a nodule within the plaque. The Breslow thickness was 7.5mm, an unusually late presentation in a young man, on the front of his chest. He developed an axillary node metastasis within 4 months.
