Compound melanocytic naevus

These acquired moles consist of nests of naevus cells both at the dermoepidermal junction and in the dermis so they are raised. There are only two colours (light and dark brown) present in these benign naevi.
This sun-damaged lady had previously had a melanoma removed but this lesion is benign. There are essentially only two shades of pigment present dispersed in an organised and regular manner.
It is sometimes useful to examine these lesions from a distance because the regularity of organisation of pigment and outline is more reassuring than the minor variations seen on very close inspection which may cause unnecessary alarm.
It is helpful to contrast these benign naevi with the heavily and variously pigmented melanomas depicted elsewhere in this section.
This is the same patient as in the image above. All Caucasians have multiple moles and they vary in appearance even in one individual.
