Alopecia areata

	Scattered pits are present in the nail plate. This young West Indian man also had alopecia areata.
	Pits are present. Some of them have joined up and produce horizontal lines. Both horizontal and vertical lines may occur in alopecia areata.
	Fine longitudinal lines are present which can be seen on close inspection to be made up of tiny pits. This is very characteristic of alopecia areata. This patient had alopecia universalis which is quite often associated with prominent nail changes.
