Eczema involving the nails

Coarse pits are present in this 3 year old's nail. These were caused by eczema around the nail fold, which was treated some months previously and has now disappeared.
This child has eczema. When it affects the fingers particularly around the proximal nail folds it may interfere with nail formation in the underlying nail matrix resulting subsequently in horizontal ridging of the nails. By the time this happens the causative eczema may not be apparent.
