Superficial basal cell carcinoma

Whereas all the other types of basal cell carcinoma occur mainly on the face, this type occurs on the trunk or limbs as an isolated plaque. The lesion is shown in close up in the next picture. Although they are often treated by excision or curettage, this quite large lesion could be managed with topical 5-flourouracil. The recurrence rate is slightly higher than in Bowen's disease.
Although frequently mistaken for a plaque of psoriasis or eczema it is usually solitary and certainly does not respond to topical steroids. The thin rolled outline to the lesion suggests the diagnosis and distinguishes it from Bowen's disease.
