In the course of arguing their case as 'Convention refugees' they become enmeshed in bureaucratic performance which often casts them as conventional refugees, those who confirm to cultural expectations of suffering, passivity and silence. This book examines a range of theatre and performance practices that address questions of responsibility, hospitality and understanding. Using examples from Europe, Australia and the US it shows how theatre has represented refugees to the citizens of those states. It discusses the many ways that refugees have represented themselves through theatre and the arts and the challenges that they face as a result of mistrust and the expectations that are placed on them. 5050 $aList of Illustrations -- Acknowledgements -- Preface -- Introduction: Stories, Words and Points of View -- Refugees, Crisis and Bureaucratic Performance -- Hosts and Guests: National Performance and the Ethics of Hospitality -- Taking up Space and Making a Noise: Minority Performances of Activism -- 'We With Them and Them With Us': Diverse Cultural Performances -- Conclusion: Face to Face or Shoulder to Shoulder? -- Notes -- References -- Index --. 504 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 5050 $aIntroduction: stories, words and points of view -- Refugees, crisis and bureaucratic performance -- Hosts and guests: national performance and the ethics of hospitality -- Taking up space and making a noise: minority performances of activism -- 'We with them and them with us': diverse cultural performances -- Conclusion: face to face or shoulder to shoulder. 650 0$aTheater$xPolitical aspects. 650 0$aTheater and society. 650 0$aPerforming arts$xPolitical aspects. 650 0$aRefugees as artists. 650 0$aRefugees in literature. 650 7$aPERFORMING ARTS / Theater / History & Criticism.$2bisacsh 650 7$aPERFORMING ARTS / Theater / General.$2bisacsh 650 7$aPOLITICAL SCIENCE / Globalization.$2bisacsh 65007$aFl{EFBFBD}uchtling.$0(DE-588c)4017604-6$2swd 65007$aTheater.$0(DE-588c)4059702-7$2swd 650 7$aPERFORMING ARTS / Theater / Stagecraft$2bisacsh 655 4$aElectronic books. 77608$iPrint version:$aJeffers, Alison, 1961-$tRefugees, theatre and crisis.$dHoundmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire ; New York : Palgrave Macmillan, 2012$z9780230247475$w(DLC) 2011043422$w(OCoLC)748328781 830 0$aPerformance interventions. 994 $aC0$bTEF 095 $pES$dPN1643
